We understand the importance of protecting the personal and sensitive information entrusted to us, and comply with data protection laws. We are committed to protecting and keeping your personal information private - whether we receive it from you personally or from third parties - and take all reasonable steps to ensure its security.

Our privacy notice explains when and why we collect personal information about our customers, how we use it, the conditions under which we may share it with others and how we keep it secure. It also explains how you can obtain details of the information we hold about you and the choices you have about how we use that information.

We will make every reasonable effort to ensure any email communication is secure. Please note that transmission of data over the internet may still be intercepted and we cannot be held liable for any loss of data transmitted to us electronically.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you become aware of any failure, delay or error in sending or receiving an email. Our ‘email sent’ records will be conclusive evidence that the email has been sent unless there is a clear mistake.

Where we ask you for personal information via any of our websites, we will maintain strict security standards and procedures to prevent unauthorised access to your data by anyone - including our staff. We will maintain appropriate technological measures to ensure the information you submit remains secure.

You must not misuse our websites by knowingly introducing viruses, trojans, worms, or any other malware or material which is malicious or technologically harmful. You must not attempt to gain unauthorised access to our websites, our network, servers, computers or databases, including those that host our websites. You must not attack our websites via a denial-of-service attack or a distributed denial-of-service attack.

Doing any of the above is a criminal offence. We will report any such breach to the relevant authorities and tell them your identity. You will immediately lose your right to use our site.

We are not liable for any loss or damage caused by a distributed denial-of-service attack, viruses or other technologically-harmful material that may infect your computer equipment, computer programs, data or other material from using our site, or downloading any material from it or from any linked website.

Benni does not make any automated decisions in relation to any of the products available on this platform.

Where do we hold and/or send your personal information?

Our business is mainly conducted and held within the United Kingdom. However, sometimes the information that we collect from you may be viewed from, transferred to, or stored, outside the European Economic Area (EEA).

Your rights

 You have the following rights under data protection law:

  • The right to be informed – you have the right to be provided with clear, transparent and easily understandable information about how we use your personal information.
  • The right of access – you have the right to obtain a copy of your personal information.
  • The right of rectification – you may ask us to take reasonable measures to correct your information.
  • The right of erasure – this is also known as the “right to be forgotten”.  In sum, this right allows you to request the deletion or removal of your personal information where there is no compelling reason for us to keep it.
  • The right to restrict processing – you have rights to “block” or suppress further use of your personal information when we are assessing a request for rectification or as an alternative to erasure.  When processing is restricted, we can still store your personal information, but may not use it further.
  • The right to data portability – you have rights to obtain and reuse certain personal information for your own purposes across different organisations.  This only applies to your personal information that you have provided to us that we are processing with your consent or to perform a contract to which you are a party that is being processed by automated means.
  • The right to object – you have the right to object to certain types of processing on grounds relating to your particular situation, at any time insofar as that processing takes place for the purposes of legitimate interests pursued by Unum or by a third party.  We will be allowed to continue to process the personal information if we can demonstrate “compelling legitimate grounds for the processing which override our interests, rights and freedoms” or we need this for the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims.  However, if you object to direct marketing (including direct marketing related profiling) we must stop this. 

How to update your personal information

It is important that the information we hold about you is accurate and up to date. Please let us know if your information changes, or the information we hold about you is incorrect. You can ask the Benni team to update or correct your information.

If we have disclosed the personal information in question to another company, we will also let them know about the changes unless it is impossible or difficult to do so.

How long do we keep your personal information?

We will keep your information for as long as we have a relationship with you. Once our relationship with you has come to an end, we will retain your personal information in line with our Records Retention Schedule and/or no longer than 7 years to enable us to meet our legal obligations as outlined in the ‘How we use your information’ section. We will delete your personal information when it is no longer required for these purposes.
